Between Thoughts 🔱

After a Thought Ends

Sumi-e_3 5

Sometimes, a thought comes to an end so quietly it’s almost missed.

It was there a moment ago— moving, developing, holding attention—

and then, without any clear boundary, it’s gone.

Not pushed away; not completed; not resolved.

Just no longer present.

For a brief moment, there is a kind of openness.

Nothing in particular is happening.

No direction. No narrative.

Just a simple absence of that movement.

It can feel neutral, almost unremarkable.

Easy to overlook.

Because very quickly, something else begins.

Another thought. Another reaction. Another thread to follow.

And attention moves again.

But if that brief interval is noticed—

right after one thought ends, and before another fully begins—

there is something very clear about it.

Nothing is missing there.

There is no sense of lack, no need for anything to continue.

Just a quiet completeness,

without reference to anything else.

It doesn’t last long, at least not in any obvious way.

Or perhaps it does, but attention doesn’t remain with it.

Either way, it’s familiar.

It happens many times throughout the day, usually unnoticed.

A thought ends; another begins.

But this quiet openness—

it doesn’t begin with the thought, and it doesn’t end with it.

It is there before, during, and after—

even when the thought has ended.
