Awakening—Realization—Enlightenment

Sumi-e_14

Awakening. Realization. Enlightenment.

However you name it, it tends to appear in the imagination as something ahead.

A point on the path. A threshold to cross. A condition to finally reach.

Something that will happen after enough effort.

After the mind is quiet. After the habits are purified. After life is brought into alignment.

And until then, there is preparation: practice—correction—refinement.

A long movement toward a future moment when everything will be clear.

This is how it is usually understood.

And again—there is nothing wrong with this.

It gives direction. It organizes effort. It creates meaning.

But pause for a moment and look closely:

All of this is built on a single assumption.

That what you are looking for is not already present.

That it must be arrived at.

That it exists somewhere other than here.

Just notice that.

Because if that assumption is even slightly mistaken, then the entire structure built upon it begins to loosen.

Not collapse dramatically.

But quietly.

Like something that was never quite as solid as it seemed.
